Are you clear that you are leaving a legacy? Most people, if they think about legacy at all, think that they will leave one, but the reality is that we are all leaving a legacy day by day. Do you know where you are in the process of living life and where you want to go? You know, the old saying “If you don’t know where you’re going any path will do” is true. The great potential in many lives is wasted because it is never considered. I believe that it was Socrates who said “An unexamined life isn’t worth living.”

To illustrate, I want to share in an imaginary exercise with you, an exercise that can be especially meaningful to you young men and women. It may seem a bit morbid for a minute but hang in, this exercise can change your life for the better forever.

I want you to imagine for a few moments that you are attending your own funeral. Imagine that you can’t be seen or speak but that you can see and hear all that’s being said .

In your mind’s eye, see yourself in a quiet room where there are four groups of people standing sort of together talking quietly around your casket as you observe them.

In one group there is your family; spouse, children, maybe parents, etc,

Next are those you work with, around, and for.

Then there is a group from your church or the congregation that you identify yourself with.

Finally, you see a group of friends and neighbors.

The question is; if this were real, and today was the day, what would you hope each would be saying about you? Now that it’s too late to change or alter what you have left as a legacy, what do you hope they could say, being honest of course. Would there be a hurt that you haven’t dealt with or some love unshared? A wrong not set right? If so it’s too late now.

(In the interest of saving space I am going to address this to the men but everything I am saying is intended to be and is applicable equally to women as well)

Would you want to hear your wife say, “He was the best, most caring, and kindest man! My best friend and lover. An example to me of all a Christian man should be.” Could she say that today? Could your kids  say “My dad was a great dad, my hero, the best He was always there when I needed him and never missed a game or event I was in!”

And your colleagues, what about them? Would you want to hear, “He was the best and most skilled worker! He was diligent and his integrity stood way above the crowd! I’d go to war with him anytime! I could see his values in the way he lived!”

What do you think your friends from church would say? “A great man of God? An example of a true disciple who walked the talk every day? Both faithful and fruitful?”

Finally the neighbors. Do you know them? Could they say “What a great friend and neighbor! He was always ready to help and share, a great guy.”

Could they say those things, or similar things now? If they can, what will you be intentional about to see that they can continue? And if in your heart you know that they couldn’t, maybe not even come close, what are you going to do to change between today and that day that will allow them to? Do you care? Care enough to actually do something? To actually be intentional?

One thing is for sure, we will all face that day though we don’t know when it will be, it is coming for each of us, it will be. Another thing is that the only person who can really influence our legacy, which is what we are talking about here, is us.  And we can only do so by taking control of the things in life that we can control and acting on them in a way that will produce the desired result. Even then we can’t be responsible for everyone responding the way that we would like but all we can do is all we can do. How others respond is up to them. But we can do what we can do! There are three clear steps to legacy.

Step One is to accept personal responsibility for acting on what we can control that produces the result that we want. “If it is to be it’s up to me.”

Step Two is to decide what the result that we want looks like. If we would have those we care about and live with and among to remember us in a positive way we need to live the values that will allow them to do so.

Step Three is to prioritize those things that we do each day based on their value to the end result that we want and be sure to do the most important things first. Priorities are what we do, everything else is just talk. Our legacy will be the result of many, many little things done moment by moment each day. Choices we make about the things we can control.

For Christians, while the principles remain the same,  there is a much greater dimension and importance to this discussion. We have an eternal destiny and a legacy of our lives on Earth that we will experience in heaven forever. The great goal of a believer is to live and finish their race in such a way that Jesus Christ will be able to say “Well done!”

The beauty of this exercise is that the things that will allow Jesus to say “Well done!” will work best for all the others we care about as well. All His ways are always best for every relationship.

It is extremely helpful to write out our values and plans with specific points to use for measuring our progress, to make a personal Statement of Purpose. There is something special that happens when we write things, we tend to remember them better and also the process brings clarity.

You know, in the final analysis our legacy is and will be our choice. God has made all we need to be all He wants and plans for us freely available to us. We do have to be proactive and choose to pick up the tools and use them though, He won’t do it for us.

Just think what the world, that which we touch and by extension the whole world, would look like if everyone would choose to live this way, especially those of us who say we are Jesus’ younger brothers and sisters. Jesus in and through His family (us) is the hope, the only true hope, for the world. Plan to make 2010 the best year of your life. Be intentional. Use the three steps  and change your legacy from  accidental to sensational! Happy, blessed, and fruitful New year!

A simple life is a happy life.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not asking you to settle for less.

A simple life is more than just living on a small salary. You can be a millionaire and yet live simply, free from common worries.

You can be the president of a big and competitive company yet live in complete simplicity. You can be a dogged salesperson targeting high sales quotas and still live simply.

A simple life is abandoning most unnecessary vanities. It means you will have to give up some things in life that you really do not need. A favorite smart term in business today is “prioritizing.” Abandoning is more than just prioritizing. Abandoning is like disposing of garbage because you do not need them.

You do not include your garbage in your priority list – you throw them away for good.

As long as you have a purpose, a simple life is a meaningful life.

You’ll have your own goal — not a goal set by others for you. You see, you’re striving to achieve what you want,not what others have set for you to achieve.

In our so-called busy days, we have forgotten how simple “simple” really is.

One key to happiness is being downright simple. That’s it. Simplicity is often times so profound to other people that they do not believe it unless someone complicates it for them because it’s hard to accept simplicity with…

The Never-Ending Race

Somewhere in the silly rat race between you and your colleague or neighbours, you find yourself in the middle of mountains of pressure which isn’t necessary at all.

People purchase expensive things or do ‘weird things’ because these make them the centers of attraction. These things get better everyday because of competition. And that’s bad news if you wasn’t to keep up. The good news is, you don’t need to be influenced with any of these because you have YOUR OWN GOAL AND PURPOSE!

The pressure given by others to you is actually unreal. It’s how you have defined them to be. For instance, I have friends who makes 10x my income. But then again, I have friends who make just 10% of my income.

So really, who’s successful?

Depends on your own benchmark.

There is real pressure to be more ‘successful’ if you’re working in a company but then again, what’s your purpose? Will being promoted in your company help you achieve your goal? And how does that apply?

You have to think for yourself to be happy. But being simple can never go wrong if that’s what you’re trying to achieve – Happiness.

There are a few ways to have a simple life that can ensure happiness.

Eliminate Self-Importance

Self-importance is the basic culprit or cause of vanity. Vanity is craving more than what meets your DESIRE. It entails selfishness and self-centeredness when we’re blinded with vanity. It is mere egotism. It is mostly doing something to prove a point or to prove your self – to feed the ego. As long as you’re out to prove something, you’re susceptible to pressure. Proving something means you are competing – with who is better or has something better.

*Note: Because this is a short article, you must be able to distinguish what is vanity and a burning desire to be successful yourself.

Don’t Be A Perfectionist — It never pays off

Being a perfectionist sounds like a good  reputation to earn, but it is actually just an ego booster trying to prove that you are the best. It only makes distress an everyday meal for you. Some would insist that being a perfectionist is a good attitude to have, to make sure that your work quality is always top of the line.Yet if you’re being a perfectionist just to earn admiration, you are locked into the trap of self-importance. The worst part is, you can’t ‘see’ it.

Strive to be perfect by all means, but only in character, especially on how to become more loving, forgiving, patient, understanding, meek, and simple. Do not be a perfectionist – trying to perfect your accomplishments to prove your worth because this will lead to more frustration in life.

Try to improve your stand, YES you must. Trying to PERFECT your standard to prove your capability, DON’T.

Perfectionists live a life of distress due to frustrations and undue pressure. They easily get angry when some details are ignored.

LOVE EVERYTHING.

When you focus on love as the rule of your life, everything becomes simple. It becomes very easy for you to let go, to forgive and forget. Nothing in this life is as important as character.

People living simple lives often have enough quality time to meditate on life and realize that this philosophy is true: That there is nothing more important and sublime than to love.

The adage goes that love conquers all and never dies.

Simple people who have mastered loving people will simply let go and think positively. They give everybody a chance to try better next time.  They’re more forgiving. The way they conquer is to always find something positive in everything, thwart unnecessary distress, and free everybody of pressure.

I mean if you’re choosing between hate or love, which one would you choose?

So why not start loving now.

When we fail to do something we are expected to do, we almost always have an excuse for it. That’s just how our habit acts. But we have a choice to change that for good.

If we analyze it closely — an excuse is a self-destructive alibi for having failed to do something, especially when it involves attaining a goal. Instead of trying to persevere in finding ways to continue achieving a goal, some of us resort to excuses.

Why?

To avoid pain. Excuses. The best medicine.

But you should not use excuses for not becoming successful! That’s self-destructive.

Whenever we look at a “handicap”, we almost always look on the negative side only. It’s about time we take a look at the positive side of it. The positive side may be the difficult side, but it’s the one worth looking into. It’s the side that is going to lead us to excel in life.

Handicap can appeared in many forms — Physical handicap, mentally handicap, emotional handicap, financial handicap, etc.

It your handicap is financial, then the more reason you have to rise above your present status. And if your financial status limits your educational attainment to improve your life, do you really think that you cannot get the education you want? Make use of libraries. Come up with creative ideas to improve your life and you will find it.

If you are emotionally disturbed with negative thoughts, it is like you are sitting on a chair with wobbling legs. Try sitting on a chair with sturdy legs; meaning, look at the bright, positive side of life. Put aside negativity and start thinking positively. The only one who can stop you is yourself.

If you always have a lot of excuses, you should strive more to overcome them because you’ll be able to double the achievement. Where the odds are greater, the prize gets much bigger. After all the efforts you have exerted, the prize of success shall be a well-deserved one.

Consider this fact: it’s your life, so always make sure you’ve full control over it. You should have no problem managing the things you can control. Don’t let ‘excuses’ to control your decisions.

Accept things you cannot control the way they are, if you cannot do without them. If you can do without them, leave them and divert your attention to something else that will make your life more meaningful. Never pick on something you cannot control and turn it into ‘excuses’ that will block your success.
